ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Another work inspired by the Jubilee 2000, in Rome, a city in full euphoria for the Jubilee or Holy Year, a year that was supposed to be one of grace and renewal for the Catholic Church, but which in the rest of the world was instead marked by grave bloodshed, culminating a few months later with the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Images of the Catholic world, with its conflicts and threats around us, came to mind, and the idea of a contemporary crucifixion came to mind. The theme of the crucifixion is so pervasive in art because it depicts human suffering, becoming a symbol that prompts reflection on the human condition, suffering, and social ills. I was thinking of the works of the Italian masters Cimabue and Masaccio, who explored human suffering and Christ’s earthly perspective through the use of chiaroscuro and light. In our contemporary era, the crucifixion becomes a theme for denouncing the ills of society, such as excessive consumerism, pollution, and political and social conflicts. In my opinion, the crucifixion expresses the anguish of the human condition. This work is part of my private collection.
